Carreno Busta Remains Unstoppable, Clinches Back-To-Back Tenerife Challenger Titles

by Florian Heer

Pablo Carreno Busta continued his dominant run in Tenerife, securing back-to-back titles at the Tenerife Challenger 2. The former World No. 10 showcased his experience and consistency, defeating Austrian qualifier Filip Misolic in Sunday’s singles final 6-3, 6-2 to claim his second trophy on the island in as many weeks. With this victory, the 33-year-old Spaniard, who struggled with an elbow injury in recent years, takes another step towards returning to the ATP Tour’s upper ranks, proving that he remains a formidable force on the court.

In front of packed stands on Center Court of the Abama Tennis Academy, Carreno Busta dominated the pair’s first meeting right from the beginning. The World No. 133 saved all six break points he faced and capitalized on all of own his three break-point opportunities to prevail after one hour and 24 minutes.

“Filip is a tricky opponent. He is very solid from the baseline,” said Carreno Busta, who didn’t drop a set this week. “I knew that I would need to have a good rhythm, serving well. I tried to be aggressive all the time. The first set was pretty close, as I needed to save a lot of break points. But in the second set, I played better and could win the match.”

By capturing his 13th ATP Challenger Tour career title, he earned € 12,980 in prize money as well as 75 ATP Ranking points.

“My confidence has been growing. Obviously, when you are winning matches, things on the court are getting better. I was focused on every match and tried to do my best. Both weeks here were fantastic. After 10 matches in a row, I will now take some rest before competing in the qualifying at Indian Wells,” Carreno Busta said.

Tenerife Challenger important part of the Challenger series in Spain

Miguel Diaz Roman, president of the Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET), praised MEF Tennis Events for their exceptional organization and the importance of the ATP Challenger Tour events for professional tennis in Spain.

“For us, these tournaments are fundamental,” said the RFET president after last week’s singles final in Tenerife. Diaz Roman also praised MEF Tennis Events for their work in promoting Tenerife as a premier tennis destination: “The Abama Tennis Academy is an outstanding facility, and Marcello Marchesini (MEF Tennis Events president) understands the importance of these events. With the support of sponsors, I am sure the tournament will continue to grow.”

Carreno Busta Keeps Rolling, Reaches Back-To-Back Finals In Tenerife

by Florian Heer

The two-week Tenerife Challenger series is heading into its final weekend, with thrilling matches and intense competition setting the stage for an exciting conclusion.

Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain continued his impressive comeback run by securing a spot in Sunday’s championship match, marking his second consecutive final on the biggest of the Canary Islands. The former World No. 10, who won the Tenerife Challenger 1 title last week, maintained his strong form with a determined performance in the stage of the last four on Saturday.

On a windy but sunny afternoon with temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius at the Abama Tennis Academy in Guía de Isora, Carreno Busta eased past Benjamin Hassan of Lebanon 6-3, 6-2. The No. 3 seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 75 hard-court tournament organized by MEF Tennis Events sent down four aces and won 74 per cent of his first-service points to advance in one hour and 15 minutes.

“I can’t remember the last time I won nine matches in a row,” said World No. 133 Carreno Busta. “It must have been a very long time ago. Things are going really well for me. Today was tough with so much wind, but I stayed in the match, served well, and kept my focus. I feel very comfortable in Tenerife. From day one, I have received so many messages of support, and that means a lot to me.”

The second deep run within a fortnight further cements Carreno Busta’s return to the ATP Tour after dealing with an elbow injury in recent seasons. With a second consecutive title on the line, the 33-year-old Gijon native now sets his sights on the final, where he will aim to continue his resurgence and climb back up the rankings.

Misolic: From qualifying to the title match

Carreno Busta will take on Filip Misolic. The 23-year-old Austrian qualifier defeated Spanish alternate Daniel Rincon 6-3, 6-2. Misolic capitalized on four of his eight break-point chances to advance in one hour and 18 minutes.

“It was a tough match with the wind, but I managed it very well. I keep improving throughout the week. That’s the most important thing,” said Misolic, who has reached his first ATP Challenger Tour final since finishing runner-up on home soil in Mauthausen in May 2023.

“It feels good to be back in a final. It will be tough as it will be my seventh match of the week, but I am looking forward to it.”

The World No. 313 is seeking his third Challenger career title after 2022 Zagreb (Croatia) and Roseto (Italy) last season. Carreno Busta could lift his 13th Challenger career trophy. The pair will meet for the first time.

Merino & Negritu claim first title of the season

Earlier in the day, Alexander Merino of Peru und Germany’s Christoph Negritu captured the doubles title. The duo battled past No. 4 seeds Daniel Cukierman from Israel and Briton Joshua Paris 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 in one hour and 28 minutes.

Merino and Negritu earned their fourth team title on the ATP Challenger Tour following their triumphs in Dobrich (Bulgaria), Sibiu (Romania) and Valencia (Spain) last year. They split € 4,540 in prize money and collected 75 ATP Doubles Ranking points.

Carreno Busta Returns To Winners’ Circle At Tenerife Challenge

Pablo Carreno Busta marked a triumphant return to the winners’ circle by capturing the Tenerife Challenger title, his first tournament victory since lifting the trophy of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal, Canada in August 2022. The former World No. 10 from Spain showcased his trademark resilience and consistency throughout the week, securing a confidence boost in his comeback journey.

Dream run in “Tennis Paradise”

Held on the stunning Canary Island of Tenerife, the ATP Challenger Tour 75 hard-court event provided the perfect setting for the 33-year-old Asturias native to rediscover his winning form. The picturesque coastal venue, with its warm climate and ideal playing conditions, set the stage for an exciting week of tennis.

After battling past Italians Federico Arnaboldi and Giovanni Fonio, as well as Vilius Gaubas from Lithuania and Spaniard Pol Martin Tiffon, Carreno Busta delivered a commanding performance in Sunday’s singles final, winning 6-3, 6-2 over his fifth-seeded compatriot Alejandro Moro Canas.

In front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Abama Tennis Academy in Guía de Isora, Carreno Busta saved all three break points he faced and converted three of his own five break-point opportunities to prevail after one hour and 23 minutes.

“Of course, this was very emotional today, as it has been a long time that I played a final,” the World No. 149 said. “It was an amazing week. I felt very comfortable here with my family attending the matches. I think this is one of the best places to play tennis in Spain and also in the world.”

With new team, back to old strength

With this victory, the Spaniard takes a significant step forward in his return from an elbow injury and aims to build momentum for the rest of the year. With the start of the new season, Carreno Busta navigated significant changes to his team. After a long partnership with Samuel Lopez – who has now joined Carlos Alcaraz’s camp – the Gijon native left Villena and returned to Barcelona, where his professional tennis journey first began. At the Tennis Empowerment Center, he aims to rediscover the level of play that once propelled him into the Top 10. Now guided by Victor Lopez Moron, Carreno Busta has made a notable step forward in Tenerife.

“I am glad to know that I am able to play at this level. My confidence is growing by winning these kinds of tournaments,” Carreno Busta said.

By capturing his 12th ATP Challenger Tour career title, his first since 2015, he earned € 12,980 in prize money as well as 75 ATP Ranking points. Carreno Busta’s journey in Tenerife is not over yet. The seven-time tour-level champion will also compete in next week’s Tenerife Challenger 2. Again, as the tournament’s No. 3 seed, he will start his campaign against Chinese alternate Jie Cui.

Carreno Busta Back In Tennis Paradise, Reaches Tenerife Challenger Final
by Florian Heer

The ATP Challenger Tour is back in the stunning Canary Islands for two consecutive Tenerife Challenger tournaments, taking place at the prestigious Abama Tennis Academy. Known for its breathtaking coastal views and world-class facilities, the venue once again welcomes rising stars and established professionals competing for valuable ATP ranking points and titles. With a vibrant atmosphere and ideal playing conditions, the Tenerife Challenger series delivers high-level tennis action in one of the most picturesque locations on the Challenger Circuit.

Carreno Busta back in a final
Pablo Carreno Busta headlines the action this week, as the former Top 10 star from Spain has reached his first final since claiming the title of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal, Canada in August 2022. Following wins over Italians Federico Arnaboldi and Giovanni Fonio, as well as No. 6 seed Vilius Gaubas from Lithuania, the third seed from Asturias eased past Pol Martin Tiffon of Spain 6-4, 6-0 on Saturday. Carreno Busta sent down four aces, saved all nine break points he faced and capitalized on four of his own 11 break-point opportunities to secure victory in one hour and 23 minutes.
“Of course, this isn’t a Masters 1000 final like Montreal, but the level on the Challenger Tour is very good and I am very happy to be here,” said Carreno Busta, whose career was stopped in its tracks by an elbow injury. “Breaking serve early helped me, and then in the second set, I played even better. My tennis is improving day by day and of course I want to win the final tomorrow. That’s my next goal.”

Tenerife: Winter tennis paradise
Carreno Busta hasn’t been in Tenerife for a long time but is glad to be back enjoying the nice weather for playing outdoor tennis. While much of Europe battles cold temperatures and indoor conditions, Tenerife offers players the perfect blend of sunshine, warmth, and stunning natural surroundings. The island’s mild climate and gentle ocean breeze create ideal playing conditions, allowing athletes to train and compete at their best. Beyond the courts, the tremendous landscapes – from volcanic mountains to pristine beaches – provide a refreshing escape and an opportunity to recharge both physically and mentally.
About 16 years ago, the former World No. 10 competed in a sub-18 tournament at the Abama Tennis Academy. Now, Carreno Busta has returned to the largest island of the archipelago and is seeking the title of the Tenerife Challenger.

Moro Canas awaits Carreno Busta
The 33-year-old Gijon native will take on fellow Spaniard Alejandro Moro Canas in the championship match. The No. 5 seed outlasted fourth favourite Henrique Rocha from Portugal 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-0 in two hours and 21 minutes.
“I am very pleased to reach my first final of the season and third of my career,” said Moro Canas. “It’s very special to experience a final at home against another Spaniard, which shows that Spanish tennis is thriving.”
World No. 164 Moro Canas is bidding for his second ATP Challenger Tour career title after lifting the trophy in Rome, Italy in late April last year. Carreno Busta could clinch his 12th Challenger career crown in addition to his seven tour-level trophies. Carreno Busta and Moro Canas will meet for the first time.

Cervantes/Rincon triumph in doubles
Earlier in the day, Inigo Cervantes and Daniel Rincon captured the doubles title. The No. 4 seeds emerged victorious from the all-Spanish final, winning 6-2, 6-4 over wild card entries Nicolas Alvaraz-Varona and Inaki Montes-De-La-Torre in 62 minutes.
Cervantes and Rincon earned their second ATP Challenger Tour team title following their triumph in Tampere, Finland in July last year. They split € 4,540 in prize money and collected 75 ATP Doubles Ranking points.

INCREASED PRIZE MONEY AND TWO WEEKS OF GREAT TENNIS
WILD CARDS FOR THE BEST TALENTS FROM THE CANARY ISLANDS

Tenerife, January 2, 2025 – Great tennis returns to the Canary Islands, ready to become the heart of the ATP Challenger circuit for two weeks. From February 2 to 16, the hard courts of the Abama Tennis Academy will be the stage for two ATP Challenger 75 tournaments. MEF Tennis Events enthusiastically confirms its tournaments in Tenerife, a charming place that in recent seasons has made many new promises of the world circuit known. Appreciated by athletes for its climate, its locations, its organization and its infrastructure, Tenerife is once again positioned at the world epicentre of this category, with professionals competing for these trophies and displaying their best tennis. Something that will undoubtedly encourage fans to visit the destination during the winter calendar.
In addition, an increase in prize money is planned for 2025, with $100.000,00 at stake for each event, which will add greater prestige to the two competitions. An agreement has also been sealed between MEF Tennis Events and the Canary Islands Tennis Federation, which will include two wild cards for the best tennis players from the islands to participate. In addition, all members of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation and players from clubs in the archipelago will be able to enjoy a 50% discount on tickets and weekly passes. For the occasion, there will be Kids Days dedicated to the youngest.

The enthusiasm of the Canary Islands Tennis Federation – After 12 ATP Challenger tournaments and 1 WTA 250, awarded in 2021 as the best world tournament in its category, the close alliance between MEF Tennis Events and the Canary Islands continues. This success is a delight for the Canary Islands Tennis Federation, as highlighted by its president, José Sepúlveda: “The initiative carried out by Marcello Marchesini not only benefits the protagonists on the court, but also the many fans who attend the tournaments. I also think of the great players who have passed through here, such as Brandon Nakashima, who after winning the tournament returned to the world Top 50.” With great satisfaction and pride, Sepúlveda also underlined the importance of the agreement for wild cards: “In the 2025 tournaments, some young people will have the opportunity to experience and participate in what a Challenger circuit is like. This experience will be granted to young people who have already proven their worth at a national and international level; for them it will be a privilege.” Regarding the state of health of the Federation, Sepúlveda explains: “The data indicate that we are on the right track. Canary Islands tennis has an excellent tradition with figures such as David Marrero and Carla Suárez Navarro. I think that all the conditions exist for new players to reach the highest levels of the ATP and WTA circuits.” The tournaments will once again be held at the Abama Tennis Academy in Guía de Isora, a destination that, in addition to its top-level tennis courts, is renowned for its Las Terrazas de Abama Suites and Los Jardines de Abama Suites hotels, its top-notch gastronomy, a shopping centre that offers a wide range of restaurants, wellness and leisure facilities, its outdoor Kids Camp and the prestigious golf course designed by Dave Thomas, a sport that is becoming increasingly popular among ATP circuit players.

MEF Tennis Events back in Tenerife – “At the end of 2020, in the midst of a pandemic, we decided to go for a project that might have seemed crazy: bringing great tennis to the Canary Islands! Five years later, we can proudly say that never has an ambition turned out to be so successful.” Marcello Marchesini, President of MEF Tennis Events, fondly recalls the beginning of the tournaments that took place between Gran Canaria and Tenerife: “In these 5 years we have organised, thanks above all to the local authorities and in particular to Turismo de Tenerife and the Government of the Canary Islands, 12 ATP Challenger tournaments and a WTA 250, winner of the award for the best tournament in the world in its category. Our main objectives now are twofold: first, to help the RFET, and in particular the FCT, to quickly develop new local talents who, thanks to our invitations, will be able to take their first steps in professional tennis. Second, to promote the incredible beauties of the island of Tenerife also in all the tournaments that we will organise in Italy in 2025.”

ALCARAZ: “GREAT PLACE. THE LEVEL WILL BE HIGH”

MARCHESINI: “A RETURN WANTED BY THE PLAYERS”

Tenerife, 22 November 2022 – Professional tennis is ready to return to Tenerife. After hosting a WTA 250 and an ATP Challenger event in 2021, the island is back in the spotlight with three tournaments in the early season calendar. MEF Tennis Events consolidates the relationship with the Canary Islands and with the Abama Tennis Academy, which will be the stage of the events. An ATP Challenger 100 will be played on the outdoor hard courts of the renowned facility from 15 to 22 January, while two ATP Challenger 75 will be played from 29 January to 5 February and from 5 to 12 February. The events were presented at the press conference held at the Abama Resort Tenerife, with the number 1 in the world Carlos Alcaraz among the speakers. The announcement of the tournaments is great news for players who, mindful of last season’s success, have been anxiously awaiting Tenerife’s return to the calendar.

Alcaraz: “I have great memories of the ATP Challenger circuit” – “I have very good memories of my time in the Challenger Tour and I believe there is no better place for players to compete than Tenerife: the setting is stunning.” There is no doubt for the world number one Carlos Alcaraz, who among his appearances on the ATP Challenger Tour also recalled those in the tournaments in Todi and Gran Canaria in 2020 and 2021, when he was graced with wild cards from MEF Tennis Events. “This is my first time in Tenerife and I was positively surprised, the people are welcoming and the scenery beautiful – the impression of Alcaraz, who chose the island to rest and start recovering from the abdominal injury that prevented him from playing Nitto ATP Finals and Davis Cup -. These days I have been resting. Of course I’m looking forward to getting back on the court, but it’s important to be able to take moments to disconnect at the end of a very long season. I am going to the gym now, but without overdoing it.” During his enforced absence from the tennis courts, the Spanish prodigy has therefore had time to devote his passion for golf on the Abama Golf: “I really enjoy playing and when I can I take time for Golf. Competition with Nadal? I am absolutely not at his level, to get there I need years and a lot of training.”

Marchesini: “Abama Tennis Academy, a unique location” – The announcement of three tournaments is of course a great satisfaction for Marcello Marchesini, president of MEF Tennis Events: “During last season so many players asked us if we would be able to reorganize the tournaments in Tenerife, this is a testament to the great work done and the beautiful venue. We will play again at the Abama Tennis Academy, a unique place that boasts a Center Court overlooking the ocean.” Among the press conference speakers is proudly attending Carlos Alcaraz, who in his carrer has also participated to MEF Tennis Events tournaments, in fact in 2020 he was the protagonist in Todi and Gran Canaria tournaments: “Announcing these tournaments in the presence of Carlos is a great pleasure and is a confirmation of the importance of the ATP Challenger tour, which in terms of quality of players is close to the major circuit. Alcaraz himself is proof of this. In just over a year Carlos won ATP Challengers to triumphing at the US Open.” Therefore, the anticipation for the start of the new season is growing with the three tournaments that will showcase the island: “For a month Tenerife will be the beating heart of international professional tennis. We thank the Cabildo de Tenerife, Turismo de Tenerife, Real Federación Española, ATP, Ayuntamiento Guía de Isora, Abama Resort management, Federación Insular de Tenis de Tenerife and Federación Canaria de Tenis for the esteem and support they will give to the events.”

Brendan Breen’s joy – On a special day for the Abama Tennis Academy, the words of Abama Tennis and Abama Golf director Brendan Breen could not be missed: “For me it is a pride to be here with world number one Carlos Alcaraz. The Abama Resort Tenerife has invested in the facilities to be recognized more and more as an excellence. This is also why the ATP and MEF Tennis Events have once again placed their trust in us by awarding us three ATP Challenger tournaments in 2023. Our goal is to continue to host great events in the future and to do better and better,” remarked the director, who with MEF Tennis Events in 2021 has already taken away the satisfaction of having organized what was awarded as the best WTA 250 of the season. Along with him and Carlos Alcaraz, Pedro Martin, president of the Tenerife Cabildo, and Josefa Mesa, mayor of Guía de Isora, also spoke at the conference.

Tenerife Island is ready to host the stars of world women tennis. From Saturday 16th to Sunday 24th October the Tenerife Ladies Open, a WTA 250 tournament organized by MEF Tennis Events, will take place in the Abama Tennis Academy.

The prestigious event on the fast courts of the Spanish academy can count on the participation of some of the best champions on tour, especially the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the current world n.7. A tournament that will be based on the respect of the environment.

In fact the athletes will receive, in addition to the welcome kit provided by the organization, the steel bottles agüita, in order to eliminate the excessive use of plastics. “Por un paraíso sin plástico” (for a paradise without plastics) in fact, is the slogan of the company which is a partner of the Tenerife Ladies Open.

Every minute a million of water bottles are sold worldwide – as it is explained in the official agüita’s website –. Less than half of that amount is recycled, and just 7% is used to produce new bottles. Do you know where the majority of all bottles ends up? In our oceans. For the total amount of 15 millions tons of rubbish that ends up in the ocean every year, around 75% is plastics”.

And looking at the future, the framework is not positive at all: “Plastics productions should  quadruplicate by 2050. It’s shocking. Luckily there are small things that we can do in order to avoid this scenario. That’s what we call the 3Rs”.

Just three simple and effective concepts: “Reduce. Tap water is safe to drink here in the Canary Islands, since it respects all the standards established from the European Union. So the easiest and cheapest option is just drinking tap water. Reuse. Agüita’s bottles are made up of 18/8 stainless steel and they are the best way to carry food and drinks. Last but not least: Recycle. These are high quality bottles and they are made to last ages, therefore your agüita bottle will be by your side for a very long time”.

From 10am of Saturday 16th October, the bottles will be available for the tournament spectators in the welcome area of the Tenerife Ladies Open. The best of tennis is coming to Tenerife. And it’s respecting the environment.
