TENERIFE CHALLENGER 1, WILD CARD TO FABIO FOGNINI
MARCHESINI: “FABIO JOINS OTHER GREAT CHAMPIONS”
THERE IS ALSO LANDALUCE, THE FUTURE OF SPANISH TENNIS

Tenerife, 12 January 2024 – Tenerife Challenger 1 is enriched with another prestigious name at the starting line. Fabio Fognini will land on the Canary Island to play the first of three tournaments organized by MEF Tennis Events on the hard courts of the Abama Tennis Academy, by virtue of a wild card for the main draw granted by the organization. The Taggiasco becomes part of a rich entry list that already included his compatriots Flavio Cobolli and Raul Brancaccio, as well as the promising Abdullah Shelbayh and the champions of the last two editions of the Next Gen ATP Finals Brandon Nakashima and Hamad Medjedovic. Martin Landaluce will also be there in the ATP Challenger 100 which will take place from 14 to 21 January. The Spanish Tennis Federation granted the former under-18 world number one one of the two wild cards at its disposal, the other invitation went to Alejandro Moro Canas.

Fognini joins Cobolli and Brancaccio – For Fabio Fognini, one of the most illustrious names on the Italian tennis scene, the results obtained during his career speak for themselves. Best ranking of number 9 ATP, champion of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 in 2019 and one of the players with the most appearances in the Italian Davis Cup national team. Despite a year decimated by physical problems, the thirty-six year old from Arma di Taggia has not lost his will to fight. In a 2023 of ups and downs he stood out with the third rounds of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia and Roland Garros, while at the end of the season he closed on a high note with the semi-final in the ATP 250 in Metz and the victory in the Challenger in Valencia in end of November. Currently at position number 105 ATP, the Ligurian is chasing a return to the Top 100 which has been missing since April last year, and in Tenerife he will join Flavio Cobolli and Raul Brancaccio representing the Italian troop on the island. “For us it is a joy to return to host so many great champions – said the President of MEF Tennis Events, Marcello Marchesini –, to whom Fabio has now been added. We will find ourselves in a splendid place like the Abama Tennis Academy, which in 2021 allowed us to win the award as the best WTA 250 tournament of the season. All this would not be possible without the help of the Government of the Canary Islands and the support of Tenerife Tourism, who have renewed their trust in us also for 2024″.

Wild card in the main draw also for the talented Landaluce – Martin Landaluce has been added to the large group of interesting young people ready to battle it out in Tenerife. The Spaniard, former world number one under 18 and champion of the US Open Junior 2022, will take to the court in Tenerife thanks to a wild card granted to him by the Spanish Tennis Federation. During 2023, Landaluce had the opportunity to play in the first round of the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid by virtue of a wild card, which was joined shortly afterwards by the first round of the ATP 250 in Umag. The alternation between these tokens in the major circuit and the first victories in the Challenger circuit, culminating with the quarter-finals in Alicante and Valencia, allowed him to become the first tennis player born in 2006 to enter the Top 500 (now n.443) . “I have to say a big thank you to the Spanish Federation and its president Miguel Diaz Roman – added Marcello Marchesini -. The intense collaboration we are having contributes to the spectacle we will see on the pitch, and with their important help we are increasing the number of Challenger tournaments in Spain, which is now like a second home for us.” The Iberian presence in Tenerife is enriched with further names to keep an eye on. The Spanish Federtennis also granted a wild card for the main draw to Alejandro Moro Canas (current number 230 ATP), while the two invitations for the qualifiers went to Pol Martin Tiffon and Daniel Merida Aguilar (number 235 and 439 ATP respectively). Also fighting for access to the main draw will be Tomas Quesada (an athlete originally from Gran Canaria) and Kenay Ortiz (tennis player from the Tenerife Tennis Academy), both of whom will be awarded a wild card by the organisation.

Tenerife Island is ready to host the stars of world women tennis. From Saturday 16th to Sunday 24th October the Tenerife Ladies Open, a WTA 250 tournament organized by MEF Tennis Events, will take place in the Abama Tennis Academy.

The prestigious event on the fast courts of the Spanish academy can count on the participation of some of the best champions on tour, especially the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the current world n.7. A tournament that will be based on the respect of the environment.

In fact the athletes will receive, in addition to the welcome kit provided by the organization, the steel bottles agüita, in order to eliminate the excessive use of plastics. “Por un paraíso sin plástico” (for a paradise without plastics) in fact, is the slogan of the company which is a partner of the Tenerife Ladies Open.

Every minute a million of water bottles are sold worldwide – as it is explained in the official agüita’s website –. Less than half of that amount is recycled, and just 7% is used to produce new bottles. Do you know where the majority of all bottles ends up? In our oceans. For the total amount of 15 millions tons of rubbish that ends up in the ocean every year, around 75% is plastics”.

And looking at the future, the framework is not positive at all: “Plastics productions should  quadruplicate by 2050. It’s shocking. Luckily there are small things that we can do in order to avoid this scenario. That’s what we call the 3Rs”.

Just three simple and effective concepts: “Reduce. Tap water is safe to drink here in the Canary Islands, since it respects all the standards established from the European Union. So the easiest and cheapest option is just drinking tap water. Reuse. Agüita’s bottles are made up of 18/8 stainless steel and they are the best way to carry food and drinks. Last but not least: Recycle. These are high quality bottles and they are made to last ages, therefore your agüita bottle will be by your side for a very long time”.

From 10am of Saturday 16th October, the bottles will be available for the tournament spectators in the welcome area of the Tenerife Ladies Open. The best of tennis is coming to Tenerife. And it’s respecting the environment.

WTA TENERIFE LADIES OPEN, THE ENTRY LIST IS OUT

SVITOLINA FIRST CANDIDATE FOR THE TITLE

RISKE, SORRIBES TORMO, GIORGI AND PAOLINI ARE ALSO REGISTERED

Tenerife, 23 September 2021 – The appointment with the second WTA 250 tournament organized this season by MEF Tennis Events is approaching. The Abama Tennis Academy of Tenerife will host the Tenerife Ladies Open from 18 to 24 October, the same venue for the men’s Challenger scheduled from 1 to 7 November. Among the stars of the circuit and young promises, the entry list of the women’s tournament has been released, which will be covered on television in over 150 countries.

The entry list – Elina Svitolina‘s presence stands out among the members: the world number 4, one of the queens of the Tour, is hunting for the second title of the season after the triumph in the WTA International in Chicago and aims to win precious points to return on the podium of the ranking, where she arrived in 2017. For the Ukrainian it will be a return to Tenerife, since in the past she did part of the winter training on the Spanish island together with Gael Monfils, a colleague who this year became her husband. In second place on the entry list the American Alison Riske, recent finalist of the WTA 250 in Portoroz, then the Slovenian Tamara Zidansek, semifinalist this year at Roland Garros. The only Spaniard on the list was the warrior Sara Sorribes Tormo, protagonist of an exciting season during which, among various successes, she stood out for the elimination of world number 1 Ashleigh Barty in the first round of the Tokyo Olympic Games. Also awaited for the blue Camila Giorgi (champion of the WTA Premier of Montreal), Jasmine Paolini (winner of Portoroz) and Martina Trevisan (winner of the $ 80,000 tournament in Valencia), for Clara Tauson, Marta Kostyuk and Maria Camila Osorio Serrano.

Marchesini from MEF Tennis Events- Less than a month before the start, the emotion of Marcello Marchesini, president of MEF Tennis Events, is tangible: “After the success of the two Gran Canaria Challengers, staged in Las Palmas at the beginning of the season, our collaboration with the Canary Islands. We knew we could organize a Challenger in Tenerife, then the WTA, mindful of the splendid Parma tournament in May, suggested we repeat ourselves. It seemed right to talk about it with Tenerife Tourism, which welcomed this opportunity with great enthusiasm as well as the Municipality of Guía de Isora and the property where the tennis club is installed, Las Terrazas de Abama. The support of the institutions is essential for our events and also in this case we have found it from the beginning “. The link with Spain is increasingly solid: “We are collaborating strongly with the Real Federación Española de Tenis. There is a very important project to go forward over the years with the organization of a tournament of this level “. In 2020 MEF Tennis Events signed the restart of the sport first in Italy and then internationally. This year the efforts made in the most difficult season of all have paid off: “We thought it was impossible to replicate the events we started in 2020, but the truth is that 2021 was our best year ever. This gives us strength and determination to look to the future with optimism ”.

The pride of Tourism and Federation – There is also the comment from Tenerife Tourism: “By following our new promotional strategy, we are attracting major international sporting events that perform a double function: the direct impact from the point of view of the value of the destination as well as the international promotion of the excellent infrastructure we have, in addition to the landscape and the mild climate. This tournament will be a fantastic opportunity for residents and potential visitors to enjoy a great sporting spectacle of the highest level ”. In closing the statements of Miguel Díaz Román, president of the Real Federación Española de Tenis: “For RFET it is always a pleasure to host a new tournament in our country. Spain is a land of champions who have been forged thanks to the important network of clubs we have throughout the country. In four years we have given a change to international competitions by increasing the number of tournaments very significantly. Therefore, hosting the Tenerife Ladies Open is a great joy. I would like to thank and congratulate the organizers because it is not easy to organize a WTA 250 these days ”.

Santos and Marrero – Paul Santos, Councilor for Sport of the Municipality of Guía de Isora is ready for the event: “For the Municipality of Guía de Isora, hosting this event is a source of pride and is a new opportunity to emerge on the map as one of the main destinations of sports tourism in the Canary Islands. The quality of the facilities and the good climate make Guía de Isora an attractive destination for sports 365 days a year “. Tournament director David Marrero, former number 5 in the doubles world echoes him: “The entry list is incredible. We will have a top 5 and other stars of the WTA circuit, I’m sure it will be a week of great tennis from all points of view. Personally, I am grateful to MEF Tennis Events for the opportunity to direct a tournament of this level: I can’t wait for the adventure to begin. ”

MEF TENNIS EVENTS IN TENERIFE

A WTA 250 IN OCTOBER, AN ATP CHALLENGER IN NOVEMBER

MARRERO: “GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE CANARIES”

Tenerife, August 17, 2021 – Great tennis returns to the Canaries. From 18 to 24 October the Abama Tennis Academy in Tenerife will host a new WTA 250 tournament, while from 1 to 7 November the fast courts of the same academy will host a men’s tournament on the ATP Challenger circuit. Both events will be organized by MEF Tennis Events, which returns to the wonderful Spanish islands after the two Gran Canaria Challengers at the beginning of the season.

The joy of Marrero – The director of both tournaments will be David Marrero, former number 5 in the world of doubles: “These tournaments are a great opportunity for the Canaries. People will be able to attend the matches of the best tennis players in the world: it will be the first time that one of these islands will host a WTA 250. Tenerife will prove to be up to par and clearly also for everything that concerns tourism it will be a huge chance. I hope the players will feel right at home and I am sure that the entry list will be of the highest level. Two weeks after our tournament, the WTA Finals will be held, so important points will be up for grabs in Tenerife: I expect a great show in front of an enthusiastic audience ”. Then the speech of the native of Las Palmas on the ATP Challenger: “The climatic conditions of the island are ideal for playing tennis. It will be the third men’s event of the year after the two Gran Canaria Challengers: these tournaments give enormous motivation in particular to the youngest, who have the opportunity to compete and live a week alongside great players. I have to thank MEF Tennis Events for trusting me: my goal is to take advantage of the experiences I have faced as a player alongside the best in the world, to put professionals at ease on and off the court. The tournament director must know what the boys want and what they are looking for during a demonstration ”. There is also room for an idea for the future: “I would like the other Canary Islands to host tournaments like these next season as they consider that MEF Tennis Events is a guarantee of success”.

Marchesini does not stop – Particularly satisfied Marcello Marchesini, president of MEF Tennis Events: “I am extremely happy to continue the collaboration with the Canary Islands. After reaching an agreement with the ATP to organize the first ATP Challenger in the history of the island from 1 to 7 November, we were proposed by the WTA, after the Asia tournaments cancellation, to organize a WTA 250, and the choice more logical was to propose it in the same venue, the prestigious Abama Tennis Academy. For our part, we are very proud to have received this call from the WTA, which acknowledged the excellent work done in May at the Parma tournament, which was attended by the Williams sisters. These are months full of satisfactions, which repay us for the courage we had in the worst period of recent years, when in 2020 we organized the Italian Absolute Championships and then the Challenger of the restart of international tennis, both in our home town, Todi”. In just 18 months, MEF Tennis Events has therefore organized the Absolutes, the Serie A1 finals, 7 ATP Challengers in Italy, an ATP 250 and a WTA 250 in Italy and, at this point, 3 ATP Challengers in the Canary Islands and a WTA 250 in Tenerife.
